Same as WD_BLACK SN850, but much more expensive

WesternDigital sent us a statement announcing a collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment to launch an official SSD for the PlayStation 5, and this is the WD_BLACK SN850 for PS5. Of course, the first thing that came to mind was to see the price of the WD_BLACKSN850 “normal”, and as expected, there is a huge overhead.

Yes, it’s an edition designed for the PlayStation 5, but that comes down to an extra cost to pay a packaging box with the design of PlayStationsince the design of the SSD is identical (which doesn’t matter when it’s hidden), not to mention the specs, so at the moment of truth we’re before the same SSD but more expensive.

For now only available on its official website, the WD_BLACK SN850 for PS5 has a cost of $169.99 in its 1 TB version and $279.99 in the 2 TB version. WD_BLACKSN850 “normal” costs $119.99 and $207.99, so we’re talking about an additional cost of 50 and 70 dollars respectively to have only a different box than the original PC-oriented product.

Both drives are identical, so we’re talking about a PCI-Express 4.0 interface, read speeds of up to 7000 MB/swrite speed up to 5300 MB/s and random read and write up to 1,000,000 IOPS.

“We are thrilled to partner with Sony Interactive Entertainment and have the opportunity to bring the only officially licensed unit to PS5 gamers,” said Susan Park, Vice President of Product Management, Consumer Solutions, Western Digital. .

“Western Digital’s WD_BLACK brand was created to provide high-performance products to gamers around the world. The purpose of this agreement is to continue our strategy of developing storage solutions that enhance the gaming experience for all gamers.”
