Russia already has its own controller to bring PCIe 4.0 SSDs to life

At Russia’s leading industrial fair, Innoprom 2022, local business kraftway announced their SSDs ASIC v1 Yes ASIC v2where the main peculiarity of the two storage units is that they use a controller designed in Russia, the K1942VK018. Of course, don’t expect it to become popular, since the architect of its manufacture is the TSMC as part of a manufacturing process 28nm HPC+a company that stopped supplying chips to the country due to the veto after the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

This controller has 8 channels, and will bring to life units available in HHHL, M.2 and EDSFF formats, which allow RAID configurations, monitoring or energy management.

The ASIC Kraftway v2 was displayed in HHHL format and supports memory usage 3D MLC, TLC and QLC from manufacturers such as Kioxia, Micron or the Chinese company YMTC (Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.). These units are attached to an interface PCI Express 4.0 x4 although they do not reach high speeds, and it is expected that the read and write speed will not go very far from the 1500 MB/swhile 4K random read and write speeds will hover around 200,000/100,000 IOPsYes, and all this with maximum capacities of up to 16 TB.

The ASIC Kraftway v1 it is more security oriented and supports the use of 2D/3D MLC memory, and in this case is limited to one interface PCIe 2.0 x4 with a maximum storage capacity of 2TB with sequential read and write speeds of 830/680 MB/s with 4K random read and write speed of 55,000/65,000 IOPS.

The manufacturer has already confirmed that the first units manufactured are distributed in CPU-powered systems Elbrusand it must be remembered that Russia does not receive equipment or components from abroad, so now they only have to deal with components of local development. The company started working with TSMC before the financial sanctions imposed on Russia, so it will only be able to produce the units with the stock received before the sanctions began.
