OLED monitors for gaming are already a reality: AKRacing OL2701

Promises and more promises, that’s what we’ve been hearing for how long? 4 or 5 years? Many may have already given up hope as such, but the reality is that the manufacturer JOLED is quietly doing hard work to overcome the problems that an OLED-like panel faces in PCs. The first models have been ready for almost a year and now a brand has taken the plunge to market them, thus presenting the AKRacing OL2701the first OLED display commercial for games

As expected and after LG’s near-refusal to fully enter the OLED world for PC, it was necessary to JOLED the one who gave the step of the hand of Sony and Panasonic. The first commercial monitor you can buy won’t blow your mind in many ways, but in others it will really take the cake and if the market helps a bit we’ll definitely start seeing them on PC.

AKRacing OL2701, lights and shadows for the first commercial OLED monitor model

Many of the current specs for this monitor are no longer relevant as such, but wait till the end as they say. with a panel of 27 inches with resolution 4K we have an organic panel made with JOLED’s new RGB printing method. Surely you know the manufacturer since they make quite competitive gaming chairs in quality and price, which is why they are now making the jump to OL2701 OLED monitors.

The panel’s pixel density for this resolution and size is pretty perfect, with 163ppibut where it is surprising is in something that OLED logically has as its strong point, brightness and contrast.

In the first of them, he gets nothing less than 540cd/m2while in the second we pass to the impressive 1,000,000:1.

where it is also distinguished by the RGB printing (embedding color in sub-pixels to enhance color) is in the color gamut, because it achieves a 130% sRGB and 99% DCI-P3certainly not bad for an OLED monitor for gaming.

Burnout reduction function with real-time monitoring

As you surely know, the problem with OLED panels is burnout or etching, hence their delay in this market, since a user spends a lot of time with static images whether we like it or not (the desktop -same). JOLED has equipped this panel for this OLED gaming monitor of AK Racing, OL2701of a function of reduction of Burnout which controls the brightness pixel by pixel, in real time, so that it manages to reduce the problem in a more than noticeable way without doing it by zones, customizing each of the points.

Needless to say, the response time of the panel is incredible: only 0.1mswith viewing angles of 178º vertically and horizontally. Finally, it is equipped with two HDMI 2.0, one DisplayPort 1.4, one USB-C, two USB 3.0 and two 2-watt speakers.

As you have surely noticed, we have not given data on the refresh rate, which is important being a gaming monitor. And there is controversy, because it does not appear on the official website of AKRacing, and the Japanese media that echoed it, are dancing between 60Hz and 140Hz. So either this is a leak from the panelist as such, or it hasn’t been revealed for some reason.

What we do know is that it will cost 298,000 yenthat in exchange the incredible number of €2,100, so cheap as such is certainly not, even if being the first as such is not really expensive. Its VRR is also not reported, so we cannot give data on FreeSync or G-SYNC in any of its available versions.
