Apple has announced its most basic new next-gen SoC, the Apple M2which they point out was made by TSMC using a manufacturing process of 5nm enhanced (vs 5nm) to increase performance without penalizing power consumption.
This allowed you to add 20 billion transistors4,000 million more than its predecessor, plus 4x refreshed high-performance cores + 4x low-power cores energy promising improved CPU performance of up to 18 percent also supported by increased cache memory.
In the graphics section, things improve even more by integrating a configuration of 10 cores (2 more), which allows to increase performance up to 35% (25% with the same energy consumption) until reaching the 3.6 TFLOPs power
These graphics are capable of bringing life two external monitors with 6K resolution (or many more monitors at a lower resolution) and allow encoding and decoding of 8K content in H.264 and HEVC format.
We continue with the memory, where now it is able to support up to 24GB LPDDR5 RAM succeed in increasing the bandwidth by 50% until reaching the 100 GB/swhile its 16-core Neural Engine will be able to process 15.8 trillion operations per second (40% more than its predecessor). All of this combined will bring to life a new generation of MacBook Air laptops with up to 20 hours of battery life.
Apple M2 vs. Intel Alder Lake processors for laptops
In terms of performance, the company promises that its Apple M2 is capable of surpassing to a 10-core Intel Core i7-1255U processor (2x P-Core + 8x E-Core) for Alder Lake family notebooks, all while consuming less power.
For example, they tell us that for equal consumption, almost 15Wthe Apple M2 is 90% fasterwhile squeezing nearly 30W into the Intel CPU, that’s about 20% slower.
